Resumen
Este artículo intenta mostrar algunos de los factores que permiten explicar el brutal proceso de violencia política vivido en la Guerra Civil española lejos del frente, en la retaguardia controlada por los militares rebeldes, en una pequeña región rural como La Rioja. En primer lugar, hay que subrayar el carácter premeditado y deliberado del terror totalitario impuesto por los militares rebeldes y sus apoyos sociales desde los momentos iniciales del golpe de estado. En segundo término, hay que tener en cuenta la actuación de los poderes locales y la influencia de los conflictos sociales y políticos existentes en los años anteriores, sobre todo durante la Segunda República. Junto a estos aspectos, por último, hay que valorar las convicciones ideológicas, las creencias religiosas, las identidades

Abstract
This article aims to describe some of the factors which explain the brutal process of political violence experienced during the Spanish civil war in places far away from the front, such as the rearguard controlled by rebels in the small rural region of La Rioja. It is important to stress on one hand the premeditated and deliberate character of the totalitarian terror regime imposed by the military rebels and their social network since the beginning of the coup d’etat. On the other hand, we need to bear in mind the activities of the local powers and the influence of former social and political conflicts, especially those from the Second Republic. Finally, it also
