Abstract
This paper has the purpose of studying the transposition into the United Kingdom of
European Council and Parliament Directive 2001/42/CE 27 June 2001, relating to the evaluation of the effects of particular environmental plans and programs performed through the appointed Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations and through other laws approved in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Prior to the stated date, the British Government had enacted a great number of similar instruments to those contemplated in the 2001 Directive, for the purposes of incorporating environmental aspects into state, local and regional planning. This work focuses on the new British legislation —The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004—, which has introduced significant amendments to the planning in force, incorporating environmental requirements which should be included in said planning instruments.
